BHPS Strings Program

We are delighted to introduce you to the BHPS Strings Program.

Balgowlah Heights Public School has two string groups: the Beginner Strings and the String Ensemble.  Both ensembles meet before school, on different days, in the AV/music room on the Western Campus.

Beginner Strings

This group is made up of year 1 and 2 students who have never played a stringed instrument before.  It is an introductory class which builds on the general music skills and awareness taught in classroom music teaches the basics of music reading- rhythm and pitch as well as the fundamentals of playing a stringed instrument. Students are not required to have private instrumental tutoring in beginner strings. Students may learn violin or cello.

If you are interested in joining our Beginner Strings Program please access the Strings Handbook for further information about the instruments and program.  Access this link to hear samples of the range of string instruments.

String Ensemble/s

This group is made up of more experienced players who have either completed the year in Beginner Strings or who have had a least 6 months of private lessons on their stringed instrument and reached a minimum level of proficiency.

Students must be having weekly private instrumental tutoring on their stringed instrument and are expected to learn the musical part that they have been assigned at home, with help from their tutor as needed. This group’s focus is on ensemble skills, playing and performing together. Students need to be able to read music and may play violin, viola, cello or double bass.

Some of our more advanced students have been given the opportunity to participate in the D.E.T. Arts Unit’s Festival of Instrumental Music and performed in the concert hall of the Sydney Opera House since 2016 in the massed primary school’s string ensemble; an amazing experience.
