Beginner Strings
This group is made up of year 1 and 2 students who have never played a stringed instrument before. It is an introductory class which builds on the general music skills and awareness taught in classroom music teaches the basics of music reading- rhythm and pitch as well as the fundamentals of playing a stringed instrument. Students are not required to have private instrumental tutoring in beginner strings. Students may learn violin or cello.
If you are interested in joining our Beginner Strings Program please access the Strings Handbook for further information about the instruments and program.
String Ensemble
This group is made up of more experienced players who have either completed the year in Beginner Strings or who have had a least 6 months of private lessons on their stringed instrument and reached a minimum level of proficiency as determined by the conductor.
Students must be having weekly private instrumental tutoring on their stringed instrument and are expected to learn the musical part that they have been assigned at home, with help from their tutor as needed. This group’s focus is on ensemble skills, playing and performing together. Students need to be able to read music and may play violin, viola, cello or double bass.
Some of our more advanced students have been given the opportunity to participate in the D.E.T. Arts Unit’s Festival of Instrumental Music and performed in the concert hall of the Sydney Opera House in the massed primary school’s string ensemble; an amazing experience.

Fees
Playing an instrument is a big financial commitment but well worth the investment as the skills and learning stays with them for life.
Estimated fees for a year is around $900 - around at just $18 a week. A small price for the expert conducting and guidance they receive plus the skills they learn and overall development.
The fee invoices will be issued in two instalments. One on sign up and then the other at the end of Term 1. The invoices MUST BE paid IN FULL (unless special arrangements have been made) by the end of Term One. The accounts for the Strings Program are administered by the Band Committee. Direct deposit is our preferred payment method.
The fees for each year are calculated with the intent of covering all the non-capital costs expected for that year (e.g. Conductor Fees, Tutor Fees for workshops etc.). Fee increases can therefore occur at the beginning of any year depending on the number of anticipated ensemble members and expected running costs. It is pertinent that fees are paid promptly. The proposed, estimated fees for participation in the Strings Program is dependent on enrolment numbers and may be subject to change.
Fees are strictly non-refundable if your child leaves the program during the year, as capital expenditure is made annually based on fees paid at the beginning of each year.
As this is a voluntary/extra curricular activity, a financial commitment is necessary. Please consider this when registering. If fees are not paid, membership of the program will need to be reconsidered.
Other costs
Other costs will include:
private tuition for your child to learn how to play the instrument. They then come to the ensemble to play together. For a 30 minute lesson the cost could be anywhere from $45 - $50 dependent up tutor. This is an arrangement between the parent and the tutor and does not go through the program.
Purchase or hire of an instrument. Varies depending on supplier.
